My Treatment Short Version
My story is not much different to anyone who has had cancer, certainly I have not been through as much as some people and luckily I did not pay the ultimate price as my cancer was treatable.
I was diagnosed with tongue cancer in September 2005, four weeks after an ulcer had first appeared on my tongue. My operation was on 3 rd October 2005 and was to remove a tumour from my tongue and replace with a flap of skin from my arm.
Due to complications I was hospitalised for almost 3 weeks the first week of which was in intensive care and a high dependency unit. Following my operation it was discovered that the cancer had spread to the glands in my neck so once I have re-covered from the operation I had radiotherapy, radiotherapy was quite tough and by Christmas of 2005 I was eating and drinking very little due to the soreness.
I had a few complications during radiotherapy but thankfully nothing serious, my radiotherapy ended on 12 th January 2006, within 8 weeks I was starting to feel well again. I have improved greatly since then and I now live a much fuller life, I take each day as it comes and make the most of every moment I have.
One thing that stuck in my mind from the first time I was told that I had cancer was that because treatments had been developed by organisations such as Cancer Research UK my cancer was treatable, if I have presented myself 20 years ago with this type of cancer little could have been done for me, so I made a promise to myself that once I was feeling well and healthy again I would raise as much money as I could for Cancer Research UK.
